Huawei’s Kirin 820 SoC will be faster than Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G

Honor, a subsidiary company of Huawei, is planning to launch Honor 30S on the 30th of March. Last year, Honor 20S was launched and was believed to be an affordable alternative to Honor 20. It seems Honor 30S will be its successor. And the news that is giving the Honor 30S all the attention is that it will be using the new Kirin 820 chipset, the first 5G-connected chipset from Huawei.

Kirin 820 is an octa-core SoC comprising of quad-core Cortex-A76 and quad-core Cortex-A55. It will be a 7nm chip having maximum clocking speeds of 2.3GHz. Previously Kirin 810 and 990 4G also had this but the difference is in the ISP and NPU, which are believed to be a massive upgrade. The chipset shall include a built-in 5G modem thus is expected to improve user’s experience through the use of  5G networks. The Kirin 820 modem is certain to support dual-SIM phones where one card will be handling a VoLTE calls while the other utilizes 5G data.

The company hasn’t officially announced the GPU it will be using but the Kirin 820 is highly rumored to use Mali-G77 GPU. If that’s true, Kirin 820 shall be the first chipset of HiSilicon to be using Mali-G77 GPU where Kirin 990 used G76 previously. ARM suggests G77 to be 120% to 140% faster in performance per mm² and more energy-efficient by 30%  in comparison to G76.

The Geekbench 4 scores suggested that Kirin 820 5G surpasses Kirin 980 in both single-core and multi-core performance. Likewise, the Kirin 820 5G scores higher than Snapdragon 855 in a single-core performance test while they tie in the multi-core performance test.

Likewise, Honor 30S powered by Kirin 820 5G scored 375,270 in the AnTuTu listing. The listing scores advocate that it performed better than Snapdragon 765g as well as last year’s Kirin 810 chipset and the overall performance was slightly behind the Kirin 980 chipset.
