The devices using AI are on an exponential rise right now, and we can be sure that all our devices will be run by artificial intelligence in the upcoming future. What about the use of AI in our most personal devices – the smartphones. Last year we saw Google include a dedicated hardware, the Pixel Core, in its Pixel devices to improve image processing.
Huawei on the other hand, launched the Huawei Mate 10 Pro, which came embedded a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) on its Kirin 970 SOC. The company claims that the NPU handles all types of AI related tasks (not just image processing) with a very high efficiency rate.
Huawei Mate 10 Pro is also the first phone which is powered by Kirin 970, and shows the wonders of deeply embedded AI on a smartphone. From the first hand on experience of the smartphone, we found that Huawei has successfully blended AI into every part of the smartphone experience.
The smartphone is very capable in recognizing things you are pointing the camera at, like your pets, the dishes you are having, the different flowers you see in a garden or famous buildings, as well as adjusts settings like ISO, saturation and shutter speed to make the photos you take look balanced. Right now, the Mate 10 Pro identifies only 13 scenes, but Huawei promises that in the future this will grow to a larger number.
The biggest benefit of having a dedicated neural processor on the smartphone’s CPU is that machine-learning tasks are executed a lot faster using the neural networks. AI related tasks like image-recognition or language translation are carried out blazingly fast as well as efficiently by the phone so one can notice that the device doesn’t slow down even a bit when performing them. The neural-processing unit also takes the load off of the CPU which helps to preserve battery life.
Right now the AI features of the Mate 10 Pro seem promising but in the future it will be up to the developers to bring out the maximum potential from the smartphone. Huawei Mate 10 Pro was recently officially launched in Nepal at Rs.103,000. You visit Huawei Nepal showrooms or authorized retail outlets to experience this device.
