MediaTek is a chipset manufacturer well known in a country like ours where budget smartphones are in demand. While the company produces SoC’s for all mobile phones of all price ranges, they are most popular for powering budget oriented smartphones. MediaTek has recently decided to enter into a whole new market with the launch their new MT2621 chipset. The new chipset will power IoT devices, smart trackers and wearables.
The MT2621 SoC has a single ARMv7 CPU clocked at 26 MHz with 4MB of embedded memory. It will run linux based applications. Also, it will feature interfaces for Camera and audio AMP. It also supports low wireless connectivity with Bluetooth v4.2. The most important feature of all is the GSM/GPRS connectivity with support for a single SIM card.
On paper, the power efficient CPU combined with the additional features like cellular network support seems perfect for small devices. This SoC is intended primarily for small devices like trackers, sensors etc.
With the launch of the new chipset, MediaTek intends to capitalize on an expanding IoT market. Research suggests that by 2020, the total number of IoT devices will surpass 50 billion. On the smartphone side, MediaTek is facing some tough competition with Qualcomm especially in the high end market. The company will face powerful competitors in the new market as well with already established manufacturers present in the business including Intel and ARM. With the New survey guideLaunch.
