Apple has been doing great with their macbook pros. However, their 2016 model still faces many costumer criticisms due to some bold choices. According to KGI Securities Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple looks to make improvements in their macbook pro lineup this year. Kuo, who many consider as ‘the most accurate Apple Analyst‘. So naturally everyone is taking his word very seriously.
FLAWS WITH THE MACBOOK PRO 2016
Apple has always appealed to the ‘creative types’. But this year it has come second to Microsoft due to its “lack of innovation”. Aside from the new touch bar , Apple did not have much to offer. To begin with, it is powered by older generation of Intel’s processors. The sixth generation Skylake processors, seemed like a poor choice for the best lineup of laptops Apple has to offer. The latest seventh generation Kabylake offers lower power consumption and better performance. So Apple’s choice to use the older processors left many stumped.
Another issue with the macbook pro was its 16GB RAM limitation. While 16GB memory seems sufficient, it does not fulfill the needs of every professional to whom the device is actually targeted. The SVP of worldwide marketing Phil Schiller defended Apple’s move by saying :
The MacBook Pro uses 16GB of very fast LPDDR memory, up to 2133MHz,. To support 32GB of memory would require using DDR memory that is not low power and also require a different design of the logic board which might reduce space for batteries. Both factors would reduce battery life.
KUO’s PREDICTION ON THE MACBOOK PRO
Analyst Kuo has made many predictions about the upcoming Macbook pros. In his notes where he mentions that the new macbook pros could feature upto 32GB of memory. However this option will only be available for the 15” version of the macbook pro. The 13” model will be limited to 16GB of memory. Presumably, it will use the LPDDR4 or DDR4L technology for its RAM.
Kuo expects mass production of the 13” and 15” macbook pros somewhere around the third quarter of 2017. To satisfy the growing demand for Touchbar, apple will double the production of touchbars this year.
And most importantly Kuo writes, “We predict that in 2017, all MacBook models will be upgraded to feature Intel’s new Kaby Lake platform,”.
This year’s 13” macbook pro which lacks a touch screen is the worst selling macbook pro this year. So Kuo expects the prices will drop down this year making it around the same price as the 13” macbook air.
Overall analysis indicates that Apple will see a growth in sales this year. This will be a nice change for apple as it has been seeing declining sales throughout the years in the PC and notebook segment.
But there is no mention of the ports available in the new macbook pros. The previous macbook pros featured what many considered to be a poor selection of ports. It had only thunderbolt 3 ports which made things difficult for connectivity. It will be interesting to know if Apple will decide to stick with their choice to replace every other port with thunderbolt 3 ports.
