MediaTek Dimensity 820 Announced – The best mid-range processor?

Last updated:

Nowadays Silicon chips for the devices are getting upgraded within a few months. Following the same trend, MediaTek launches its new midrange 5G chip which is a slight upgrade from its last generation Dimensity 800 series SoC. The new Dimensity 820 is more powerful than the older 800 in both CPU and GPU field.

MediaTek Dimensity 820 Specs Overview:

Dimensity 820 is a 7nm Octa-Core chipset with four powerful A76 cores clocked at 2.6Ghz, where the Dimensity 800 was clocked at 2.0Ghz. Here four power-efficient A55 cores are clocked at 2.0Ghz. It also supports LPDDR4X Ram up to 16GB. While on the GPU side it comes with Mali-G57 GPU with 5 cores (MC4), which is an upgrade form the Dimensity 800 as it only had 4 GPU cores.

Though it’s not a flagship gaming chipset like its own cousin Dimensity 1000+, but it does support 120Hz display with resolution up to 1080+ and even UFS storage. So we might see a lot of budget gaming smartphones powered by Dimensity 820 processor. On top of all that it also supports sub-6Ghx 5G networks in Asia, North America, and Europe. The 5G modem in the SoC is also upgraded and also supports  Dual 5G sim cards.

Some other fields where the Chip might excel is optics. The Dimensity 820 has support for MediaTek’s APU 3.0, which helps in providing more powerful camera features. The chip has Imagiq 5.0 as its ISP, so smartphone shipping with this chip can house 4 cameras with sensor size as high as 80 MP. The chipset also supports Multi-frame 4K video HDR. This is how Dimensity 820 chipset compares with the other two offerings from MediaTek.

After all these improvements, let’s see how the chip will perform when we get the devices powered with it. While Geekbench 4.2 shows higher CPU performance and also 33% higher frame rate in GFXBench Manhattan 3.0.

Redmi 10X antutu scores

In a recent post on Weibo from Lu Weibing we saw a whopping 415,672 score on Antutu which is a lot for a mid-range chip.  Xiaomi has already announced that their upcoming Redmi 10X will come with Dimensity 820 processor.
